About Your Instructor
Edward Riddell
Ed Riddell has been making pictures for more than 50 years. He started as editor of his high school yearbook where he learned how to work in a darkroom, process film and make B&W prints.
Later, he became head photographer of the Stanford yearbook and became obsessed with Ansel Adams and the incredible landscape photographs that he was making. Ed then started making photographs with a large-format view camera and learning the zone system approach to making exposures and printing. In 1976 Ed moved to Jackson Hole, Wyoming, where he met and married his wife, Lee. Ed and Lee still live in Jackson Hole. Ed has spent a lifetime making landscape photographs of the dramatic landscapes in Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks. Ed just published the second edition of his book of black and white photographs of northwestern Wyoming called The Range of Memory. He will begin work on a book of color images of Yellowstone this coming winter.
Ed is currently working on a new project featuring the landscapes, people and architecture of Tuscany, Italy. He has also offered two photo workshops in Tuscany. Today Ed works almost entirely with high resolution, digital equipment and continues to do all his own printing. His work has been included in two exhibitions at the National Museum of Wildlife Art, and a solo exhibition at the Troyer Gallery in Washington D.C. He has been represented by the Martin-Harris Gallery, the Oswald Gallery, and exhibited twice with his wife Lee, a painter, at Trio Fine Art in Jackson. Ed has taught literally hundreds of students how to make better photographs, and he is an enthusiastic and patient teacher.

What Our Students Say. . .
"Your workshops also help guide your students both back into the collective history of photography as well as towards a re-appreciation of the art, and craft of photography in the present. I know that I got a much needed reminder of how difficult it remains, perhaps in spite of and/or due to digital photography, to take what I would consider a good picture. I also re-gained appreciation for just how much mastery goes into bringing a chosen picture into printed form. I really appreciated the layout of your workshop and the process you provided: from re-introduction to digital basics, to taking photographs in the field, to editing, and making a final print. From this process, you showed us how to get back in touch with ourselves, our own creativity, as well as our own photographs in the context of the history of photography, and photographers. They all had to start somewhere, too, right?! In this process, you helped me get back in touch with the art, and the soul of photography, and therefore back in touch with our collective memory of the importance of images as a culture. Your workshops provide an amazing, and unusual contribution to my life as well as to the field of photography!"

"It was a terrific experience and far exceeded our expectations. It initiated us into the world of landscape photography in a uniquely personal yet technically sophisticated manner and allowed us to see the world through a different set of optics. We have a much greater understanding of our cameras, of the technical aspects of creating a worthy photograph, as well as insight into image composition. These were worthy goals for us and you helped us achieve a large measure of
them during our 4 days together. We can't thank you enough."
-Bob and Nanci
"The instruction was clear, easy to follow, well illustrated for us visual learners, and seemed to span the full range from the amateur to the pro. You worked with each of us at our individual skill level and seemed to push each of us to the next level."
-Tina
"I know it sounds as though I'm patronizing you, but your patience with us was surpassed only by your genuine desire to see our skills awakened and grow. I was astonished to observe your eagerness to see ANY image someone might be studying on a camera LCD or laptop. You were generous in your encouragement when some of us colored outside the lines. But you were appropriately dismissive when we produced ordinary snapshots or failed to think shots through."
-David
"Inspiring, well-scouted locations, thorough classroom sessions, and great group camaraderie made this an unforgettable experience. Ed Riddell is an outstanding instructor, photographer, and leader, unmatched in his preparation and organization."
-Steve
"I can be such a loner. I realize in your workshops how much I like to photograph with other kindred spirits. In this sense, too, the size of the workshop was perfect! both for the 4 days of photography, and the 1 day printing. The small size and instructor ratio felt just right. The small size allowed us to not get in each other's way, so we could then also get out of our own way in order to take the pictures presenting themselves in the moments - moments made possible by your impeccable choices of light on location. Really amazing! I cannot thank you both enough. Ultimately, your expertise, and confidence helps me get out of my own way, and have fun with the camera again!"

"The workshop was incredible - much more than I expected, and I expected a lot. My photography will never be the same."
-David
"This wasn't a typical photo workshop...the drudgery was definitely minimized, and everyone seemed to really be enjoying themselves. I got the sense that everyone really learned a lot, not only about photography, but about themselves and their abilities as well! I cannot say enough about the quality of this workshop. I headed into this with a bit of trepidation, based on my previous experiences in other workshops. You completely turned the old model upside-down for me, and I can't thank you enough!"
-Cathy
"I had a great time taking your workshop. I learned more about photography in 4 days with you than the sum total of what I knew going into the class. Not only that, but you managed to make the 4 days fun and exciting."
-Jeannie
"Many thanks for the great effort to make the Workshop a real success. You paced the four days very effectively, showed great patience, gave all of us personal attention and shared lessons gleaned from experience. All told, a great four days and a step towards becoming more proficient. I will do this again."
-Tony
"I think your workshops guide people back to themselves and to their love for taking pictures. In other people's case, you helped them see their love for taking pictures through this workshop. You were able to balance all ability levels, backgrounds, and styles due to your impressive backgrounds in all photographic formats. Also, by teaching photography in the digital format, you bring the history of photography into contemporary context in a graceful, artistic way. You show how we can maintain the artistry of the history of photography via work in the digital format. Your knowledge, and history with photography also informs your workshops unlike any other workshop I have ever taken."
