Transportation and Lodging:
Transportation will be provided during the workshop in two Suburban-style vehicles. Students are responsible for their own meals in Yellowstone National Park. We have basic and affordable reserved rooms in Yellowstone because of the limited supply of rooms in the park. Payment for lodging in Yellowstone is included in the second and final payment due by August 1st.
Lodging in Jackson, WY is not included in the workshop tuition. Participants will be provided with a list of hotels in Jackson within a few blocks of Riddell residence/studio for the night(s) in Jackson. Rooms fill early so be sure to book ASAP.
Previous Experience:
Participants are expected to have an intermediate skill level with their photography and use of their cameras. If you have any question about whether you are qualified for the workshop please contact Ed Riddell or workshop coordinator, Sarah Hoffman. (See “Contact Us” tab for contact information).
Physical Requirements:
Participants should be able to walk up to a quarter of a mile over gentle terrain while carrying their camera equipment and tripods. While we stay reasonably close the the vehicles, some walking is required to get to the best locations.
Spouses: Spouses are welcome to attend the workshop but only as full participants in the workshop. As such they would need to pay full tuition for the course except for the lodging portion which we will arrange to deduct from their second half payment. Since we are traveling in two vehicles we only have space for eight students plus two workshop staff.
Overview
There is nothing quite like fall in Yellowstone. First, the crowds of summer are gone. Below-freezing mornings create fog and mist around the rivers and lakes. Frost and mist in the geyser basins create exquisite light. Grasses, aspens and other bushes turn beautiful shades of gold, red and orange. Our quest will be to go to the "secret spots" in the Park that take advantage of these beautiful conditions. Your instructor has taught more than 20 workshops in Jackson Hole and Yellowstone over the years and he knows the best locations for fall photography. We will try to avoid the typical locations with throngs of other photographers and instead go to locations few photographers ever visit. This is not a wildlife photography workshop. Instead we seek out the intimate and grand landscapes that makeYellowstone the truly magical place it is.
Each morning and evening during the most beautiful light we'll travel to specific locations that take advantage of the "sweet light" that occurs in early morning and at dusk. On location you'll be taught the photographic techniques to make the most of each opportunity. After each morning's outing we'll return to our home base for breakfast and then meet to download images from the previous evening and morning shoot. Each student will submit three photographs for review in the daily critique. You'll also receive instruction on how to improve every aspect of your photography ranging from the technical to the aesthetic. You'll learn not only from your own work but from the work of others in the workshop as well.

Lodging
Lodging in Yellowstone is very difficult to get with most lodging sold out a year in advance. We have reserved "cabins" at both Old Faithful and Lake Yellowstone. These are some of the most affordable lodging options available in the park that have private baths. While basic, they are clean, warm and quiet. They are a short walk away from the main lodges which are at least twice as expensive. As you'll see from our daily schedule, we won't be in our rooms very much because our schedule is quite busy. You will be asked to pay for the individual cabins we have reserved in Yellowstone when you pay the second half of your workshop fee which is due by August 1st. We apologize but you will not be able to select alternative lodging options in Yellowstone. In order to guarantee our rooms we have pre-purchased our lodging in Yellowstone. It is likely that it is too late to make other lodging arrangements on an individual basis in Yellowstone. If you have a concern with the lodging we are providing we are happy to discuss it with you and see if there is a way to refund the lodging portion of your tuition should you be able to make other arrangements on your own.
Upon receiving your deposit for the workshop we will give you a list of Jackson hotels that are within easy walking distance (2-3 blocks) of Ed Riddell's studio where the trip will start and end. You will be responsible for making reservations and paying for your Jackson lodging prior to and after the workshop.
Meals
The cost of meals is not included in the course tuition. When dining as a group we can usually request individual checks. Much of the fun of the workshop happens during meals. We have reserved two tables (max six per table) each night of our stay at the Old Faithful Inn dining room and the Lake Hotel dining room. Both dining rooms are wonderful throwbacks to the old days in Yellowstone with pretty darn good menus including reasonable wine lists! You may, of course, choose to dine on your own, but we encourage you to join the group as there is always lively discussions about photography. It's a good place to hear about everyones' challenges and successes from the day's shooting excursions.

Workshop Transportation
The workshop begins and ends at Ed Riddell's home studio. Local Jackson hotels are within easy walking distance of the studio. So you will not need a rental car. Transportion to and from the Jackson Hole airport is plentiful and some hotels provide airport transportation. Transportion will be provided during the workshop in two Suburban-style vehicles. We will return to Jackson on the afternoon of the fifth day and meet for a final group dinner at a local restaurant.
