What You'll Need To Get The Most Out Of This Workshop.
Previous Experience
Participants are expected to have an intermediate skill level with their photography. If you have any question about whether you are qualified you may contact Ed Riddell to discuss your qualifications.
Camera
Almost any camera will do. We've taught workshops in which the student with the least sophisticated camera took the best pictures. However we think at a minimum you'll need a good digital camera with a basic zoom lens that takes RAW files. We urge our students to shoot in RAW format to have the most post-processing options.
Larger single lens reflex Nikons and Canons with multiple lenses are, of course, a good choice as well. Please know that this is not specifically a wildlife workshop. There are plenty of those already. Although we certainly won't pass up a spectacular wildlife opportunity. We just won't be stopping for every single bison we see!
Also be sure to bring your camera's instruction manual. With so many cameras on the market sometimes we might need your camera's Instruction manual to get it to do what we want it to.
Tripod
Shooting successful landscapes means learning to use a tripod. It's one of the differences between "just average" and good results. We'll send you specific tripod and tripod head recommendations after you sign up. We really want you to use a tripod and really learn how to use it well.
Laptop Computer
You'll need a laptop computer to edit your pictures each day and submit the images for the daily critiques. While we prefer Apple laptops, Windows machines will do, just don't expect us to be real experts. We prefer to use Capture One post processing software as it is definitely the most sophisticated post-processing software currently available and is the preferred software of most professionals working today. You can get a free 30 day trial version if you aren't yet convince. Of course, you can use Lightroom as well, but we think once you try Capture One you'll never go back.
Warm Clothing
Expect cool mornings in Yellowstone, probably slightly below freezing. At the end of September you can have any weather between blue skies in the seventies and snow. So be ready. We'll send you a clothing list after you sign up.
Enthusiasm
Definitely bring your enthusiasm. It's contagious and we like it. We expect a lot of questions and usually get them. There's no such thing as a dumb question.
